About Us
Doug and Carol Smith |
Andril Fireplace Cottages was built sometime in the early 1900's by Mr. and Mrs. Andril, a Portuguese couple. Doug and Carol Smith purchased the motel in 1960. Prior to this they had owned and operated resorts all over the country. It was not until they purchased the Andril that they found a spot they wanted to permanently call home. Doug never felt a need to go on vacation since he lived in the best place. With three boys and the motel to run they were terribly busy. Back then they had one housekeeper and a part time groundskeeper. This meant that one family member had to be on the grounds at all times. The boys delivered firewood, cleaned the rooms, and helped wherever was needed. |

But what a wonderful place to grow up! They often played with the customers' children. Kevin (the youngest son, and current owner), recalls being told he should play with the customers children, so one day, at the age of 8, he took a customer's child down to the beach (they probably should have let an adult know first). |

As time went on Doug and Carol added units and remodeled them. Back in the day folks tended to check in on Sunday and stay for a week. This meant that on Sunday no Smith went anywhere until all the rooms were cleaned. |

By 1970 the boys had grown and were heading off to College. They all ended up going to the University of Oregon, where Kevin and Linda met as freshman in 1977. Even as college students, summers were spent at the motel helping out, and let's face it, enjoying the surroundings. |

Between 1988 and 1994 Kevin and Linda had three children of their own. They also grew up in an environment where there was often a new friend to play with, for a few days anyway. They helped around the place when needed, all taking their turn working in the front office. The motel grounds gave them a never-ending list of spots for wonderful family photos, family get togethers, and interesting entertainment. A family favorite is "Lake Andril", this exists only after especially heavy rains. It turns out to be a good boogie boarding spot. 2019 saw the beginning of yet another era, Kirsten (again the youngest child) has returned to help run the motel. Heather and Dana help with IT and Social Media support. |
